If you rely on carrier unlock and are using iPhone 4 on iOs 5.1, you can unlock it using gevey sim if you are on one of the supported basebands by gevey sim. If you updated your iPhone 4 directly from iTunes using stock 5.1 IPSW, you would have got to 4.12.01 baseband which is not unlockable yet by any means. But if you did preserve your unlockable baseband first before updating to iOS 5.1, you can unlock it right away using Gevey sim.
UPDATE: You can now unlock your iPhone 4 on baseband 4.11.08 or 4.12.01 either using new GEVEY SIM or using SAM method.
iPhone 4 basebands supported by Gevey Sim are: 4.10.01, 3.10.01, 2.10.04, 1.59.00. Check your iPhone's baseband/Modem firmware by going to Settings >> General >> About >> Modem Firmware.

For those who are on 4.12.01 baseband, there is no unlock for it right now and I guess no one is working on that as well but baseband 4.11.08 is likely to get unlock very soon as ApplenBerry are working on it.

Yes someone will do that for sure..but there is no news regarding 4.12.01 unlock

If you meet those requirements, proceed:
Unlock an iPhone Out of Contract with AT&T
Locate the iPhone IMEI number and make a note of it:
Tap Settings then tap General
Tap “About” and scroll down to find “IMEI”
Call AT&T either by dialing 611 from the iPhone, or call 1-800-331-0500 and then dial 0010 to immediately speak to a representative and skip the hold time (International users dial 1-800-335-4685 )
Request your iPhone to be unlocked, provide the IMEI number of the device, and then wait for the instructions to be emailed to you
AT&T will initiate a request to unlock the iPhone and then you have to restore the iPhone through iTunes to complete the device unlock. With the device unlocked, a micro-SIM from T-Mobile or other compatible networks will now work in the iPhone.

Don't bother asking att to unlock your iphone if you bought yours from online such as ebay or craigslist. they wont unlock it for you. I waited for like almost a month with no reply so I decided to call them and they told me that my request was denied and that because i dont have proof of purchase. I bought mine from craigslist and how am I suppose to give them proof. When I fisrt call them they told me that everything look fine and that they will contact me through email. This is a waste of time
