To check baseband of your iPhone, go to Settings >> General >> About >> Modem Firmware.
Now let's unlock your iPhone. Before proceeding, uninstall ultrasn0w from Cydia and eject your sim card.

I´ve restored my Iphone 4 with using itunes and a redsn0w customized no_bb -ipsw. I also did jailbreak my phone using the very same redsn0w and installed cydia into it. Then I added the url mentioned above and looked for the ultrasn0w 5.1 fixer and installed it. After that I looked and installed the ultrasn0w and rebooted my phone using redsn0w.
I still get the no service text on the left upper corner...

Hello. I have the same problem that kmp. I've got the message "searching" all the time but no connection. Although i got my whatsapp running and everytime i change the sim, whatapp ask me if i want to change my number, so, in a way it detects the change of sims.

@leonid..No, baseband 5.16.05 is not unlockable...you will have to flash ipad baseband i,e 6.15.00 on your iPhone 3Gs if you want to unlock it...but be WARNED! If you have iPhone 3GS 16 or 32 GB that was made after week 35 of 2011 or a new 8GB iPhone 3GS made after week 28 of 2011, don’t install iPad baseband on it as it will brick your iPhone,

@snake84 No there is no untethered jailbreak for ios 5.1 yet...try downgrading back to 5.0.1 (if you have SHSH blobs saved)

I see it is a problem with a lot of people.. is the best solution to just call AT&T (Pretty sure that is what it was.)
I don't get it though, my 'criteria' matches everything and this should be working.
Also, I do have Ultrasn0w Fixer and Ultrasn0w installed correctly and in that order. I have followed every step to a 'T' on all of these youtube videos.

Now it recognizes when i don't have a sim card and says "NO SIM", the moment i put a card in, it says no service.
That problem was fixed after putting it in airplane mode for a minute or so.
But now I need it to recognize my sim card.

@Bill: Having the exact same problem and I don't know what to do.
For people who are still having issues, even after installing the ultrasnow fixer, make sure that you first Install the Fixer and then the ultrasnow. If you have already installed the ultrasnow, uninstall it totally, then install the fixer and then finally the ultrasnow. This should resolve the no service issue, however the signal bars would drop down drastically to one or two.

i tried to reinstall ios 5.1 few times, jailbreak few times, but it was still no service. and finally today i downloaded new jailbreak tool: redsnow 0.9.10b8b and finally got success, before was using redsnow 0.9.10b6!! :)

I used snowbreeze 2.9.5 to jailbreak my iphone.
i created ipsw using snowbreeze and restore my iphone using itunes
(note: Press LShift then click on restore iphone)
After that choose the ipsw you created using snowbreeze. and you will unlock ur iphone! after that install ultrasnow ( Latest ver ) and ultrasnow fixer on cydia and you will have signal bars!!
Search the Ultrasnow Latest version using cydia search and go at cydia>manage>edit>add source> add "repo.iparelhos.com" then install ultrasnow fixer!
Right 1st thing 1st take a minute,to stop and think,I updated iPhone 3GS to 5.1.1 installed iPad baseband 6.15.00,and had all the problems your all talking about,tried everything,then simply,just restored in iTunes,downloaded restore version of 5.1.1,then restored to this also re jail broke with red snow and installed iPad baseband again.... But this time I put a tmobile sim in and that worked right away,left this in for about 1 hour made a few calls and then,put it to airplane mode and then put any sim in I'v used Vodafone for the last 2 weeks without problems,hope this helps

Yes!!! It worked! I tried everything and I thought I just had a bad phone or a messed up antenna. but the problem was that it just took longer to search for the carrier.
If it searching for one and says "no service" then it says "searching" right away, that's a good thing, it means it will eventually find it. Leave it for 10 minutes or more. I was going insane and didn't know I just needed to leave it longer.
Okay, I never post. As public service here was my solution.
I have a "newer" post week 45 or whatever it questions you with. I screwed up and updated to 5.1.1 via iTunes. It had 4.x.x on it and was unlocked and jailbroken and I got it from a guy that was using it with cingular. I have AT&T. I popped my card in and it worked but service was mediocre.
I updated to 5.1.1 to go "stock" and back to normal although I have had jailbroken phones in the past. I was hoping to obtain better service from the efforts. Anyway, iTunes but on baseband 6.15.00 with the OS update. I used redsnow 0.9.14b2 and added Cydia. I ended up with searching... and No Service. I have spent probably 8 hours over the course of a few days trying to fix it. I went to AT&T and also to Apple and long story short they couldn't help me.
So, newer 3GS which doesn't like 6.15.00 bb apparently. Success came like this:
01 - I used iTunes to do a fresh update to 6.15.00 and iOS 5.1.11
02 - I used redsn0w 0.9.14b2 selected the IPSW (look for guides on how to do a jailbreak/unlock with this) and then selected jailbreak
03 - I unchecked everything except for downgrade broadband and went through that whole process
04 - I then used the same redsn0w again and selected the IPSW per the guides and selected jailbreak
05 - this time I unchecked everything except for install Cydia
06 - it crashed
07 - I ran redsn0w again and repeated steps 04,05
08 - I went and looked at the general-about and it had BB 5.13.04! Also, the id code for the SIM was showing which it wasn't previously.
09 - I did as instructed with the ultrasn0w fixer and ultrasn0w as directed in this post we all have read.
That did it! I hope this helps someone!

I have been using my unlocked iPhone 4 for almost 2 years and never had problems of NO SERVICE until yesterday. I had restarted my iPhone 4 more than once and even taken the sim card out and nothing. Still NO SERVIE appears. However, I can use WiFi when Im connetcted but has no voice. I dont have no Cydia no Jailbreak installed as I tried to follow your instructions in this link.
